The latest addition to our backyard menagerie is a Golden Orb Weaver, seen here in a small palm tree near the bamboo patch. I used to see a lot of them in Tallahassee, but this is the first one I have seen since moving to Pasco County three years ago. It is probably fairly young as it only spans about 3 inches.
These spiders spin a pretty impressive web of golden silk. Sometimes there are long stabilizing lines stretching across trails. Ours hasn't done that yet, but I expect it to reach across to the bamboo sooner or later. I'll need to watch my head in that corner of the yard now.

ReplyDeleteYour Mom and I almost walked into one of these critters when we were exploring Jekyl Island in Georgia about 10 or 12 years ago. Scary if you are not expecting it.
