Can't get to sleep. Feels like I'm going to jump out of my skin. I've been to bed twice already but kept getting back up after an hour. Then I'd come out here to the living room and feel like I'm going to nod off on my keyboard. Now my legs are getting all antsy.
Perhaps I am simply overtired. Last evening I had a job in Tampa that started at 5:30 PM. Usually late jobs like that are completed pretty quickly, but we had 150 machines to move and less than 10 people (we were not informed of the scale beforehand). Each computer was moving to another cubicle - maybe on the same floor, maybe not - which already had a computer, which in turn had to go to another cubicle, which already had a computer that had to go somewhere else, and so on. It could have turned into an all-nighter. I decided that I couldn't stay past 11 and let them know. It was cool with them, since they knew that we hadn't been told it might be such a long job. I worked my ass off right up 'til 11, though.
Why would they move every single PC? None were fresh installs, just moves. They were nearly all the same models (except that some were desktop machines while the majority were identical docking stations) with the same mice, keyboards and dual monitors. Surely they store everything on a network drive? Why does the actual hardware need to move on such a scale? Don't ask me, I'm just paid to move them.
But dang, we even had to move the UPS's from desk to desk, and they were all identical. Nobody would even notice if we didn't swap them around, but we do as we are told. That's why we get the big bucks.
Well, now, I can't speak on most of the economy, but I've recently found it a great deal easier to earn a bit of money here and there. And gas prices are going down. But my point is this: banks seem to be doing pretty well. Nearly every job I've had lately was in some kind of financial institution. One of 'em even had gold-plated drinking fountains (I kid you not) and Listerine dispensers in the lavatories. Yes, I said "lavatories". Waaay too uptown for me to call it a "Men's Room".
Gaaaaahhhh. I'm so tired that my chest hurts, but I can't get my limbs to relax. Even the dog is dreaming. Oh well; tomorrow (today?) is Saturday and I have very little of consequence planned.

".. and they were all identical"
ReplyDeleteMaybe it's to give all units equal usage, wear and tear, like one does with car tyres? ;)
