war is peace, down is up, Werk macht Frei
background entertainment: "Band of Brothers," episode 9, "Why We Fight"
Today I received a fine addition to my personal library: a reproduction of George Orwell's manuscript for his watershed novel, "1984."
This is a book that helped shape my world view. I remember when I first read it, in the seventh grade, I was actually sneered at by one particularly hoity-toity girl who had never even acknowledged my existence before. What an honor! Especially because I knew that it was she who was the fool, for deriding such an important work and ignoring its warnings.
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
How sad that Bush and Ashcroft seem to have taken this as a "How-To" manual. Dubya in particular seems to subscribe to the first and last lines of the above epitaph. Ashcroft of course lives by the second.
Condoleezza Rice has been quoted on the Sunday morning political shows as decrying the "political revisionism" exhibited in our nation lately (her words). Unfortunately for the American public, so apparently eager to roll over like good dogs and accept their master's word, it is the Bush administration - at nearly every level - that is performing the acts of revision.
Weapons of Mass Destruction? No, no, that's not why we went into Iraq. We just wanted to unseat Saddam Hussein. International crime? No! International opinion? Unimportant! We are the Mightiest of Nations. The Thousand-Year Democracy.
Bush's and Blair's exhorbitantly vocal claims of Iraq's horrible global threat, complete with falsified ties to al-Qaeda, disappear into the mist. Where is the so-called "Liberal Media" now? They lost their Liberalism (if they ever had any) during the Clinton years, when they followed the witchhunts like yapping dogs hoping for a tasty fox. Witchhunts, by the way, that served up exactly one felony conviction in eight years, and one abysmal impeachment. Not like the good old days under Reagan and Bush I, when we could count on dozens of felony convictions. Some of whom have been re-hired by Bush II, I guess because they'd make great hit men. Who knows why this chimpanzee hires anybody, except that they are all smarter than he is. Crimes? What crimes? I don't suppose he read about them. Or anything else, for that matter. From the syncophants' mouths to his ears is all that really matters anyway.
BIG BROTHER (Ashcroft) IS WATCHING YOU.
