Today worked out much better than expected. I installed Debian Squeeze and now that it's 2 AM I can install all the latest updates. There's a 1GB of stuff to download. Between 2 and 7 AM we have no limit on the amount of bandwidth, and it runs faster too. Fast enough that the entire gig of data should be downloaded within a couple of hours.
I need the updates pretty badly. The stable ("Squeeze") version of Debian has a lot of rather old software, and I'm used to the bells and whistles on the newer, less stable versions.
