Sure he could have come out with this sooner. His hand was forced by Biden. But President Obama has come out in support of same-sex marriage.
The Log Cabin Republicans called it "callous" that President Obama only made his views known the day after North Carolina voted in a Constitutional Amendment that outlaws any form of civil union other the marriage of one man to one woman. I really don't think that the President's opinion would have swayed many people, at least not toward opposing the amendment. There are a lot of people in this state who really don't like the President.
More people would have opposed the amendment if they had been educated about it; many who were told that it banned civil unions (between one man and one woman, even) with the sole exception of a "legal" marriage, changed their minds and voted against it.
I wonder, will Justices-of-the-Peace still be able to perform civil weddings? It would seem that a wedding without benefit of clergy would offend under this amendment.
But I do congratulate President Obama for making this statement prior to the fall election. That did take some courage. But, unlike Mitt Romney (the Human Wind Sock)*, he is sometimes willing to take unpopular stands in the interest of the greater good.
*The term "human wind sock" was first noticed in a comment by Oh Susanna at The Dependable Renegade.
