[Second in a series; an essentially raw diary of our trip, as I wrote it day-by-day]

Rocko found the traditional Dog Spot (tm)
(Day 2: Working)

Arose at 9 AM and came out to a beautiful mountain morning. Walked Rocko around the yard, letting him do his business (I pointed out one of the big-ass squirrels and he ran it up a tall tree) and then fed him a hearty breakfast. We're feeding him more than usual since he sleeps outside while we're here. It's only getting down to about 60F - or maybe the high 50's - but down around Tampa the overnight lows are closer to 75F, so he's not used to the "cold". Nevertheless, as I am fond of saying, "He's a dog, covered with fur. He'll be fine."

Quick note: my butt-bones are sore from sitting on logs, but that's OK too.

Ruth quit smoking a couple of years ago so our smoky smell bothers her. We bought a big bottle of Febreze and clearly need to use it (and wash all of our clothes to boot). It reminds me of all those years with Judi, when I didn't smoke tobacco and gave her shit about it so often.

12 PM -- took Rocko for a walk at 9 AM. We went all the way down to Bethel Grocery, stopping along the way at the school.

Rocko met his first horse & donkey at the intersection of Chestnut and Rt. 215. Across the street from the horses, I let Rocko go down into a little creek to get a drink; we stopped there again on the way back up to Pisgah View Drive.

We were gone for 2 hours. Lisa was getting up when we arrived. I brought Ruth's laundry (from yesterday) upstairs and folded it. A load of our tobacco-smelling clothes are washing now. Rocko's off leash and doing his best to relax; his eyes remain alert. All of this is new to him. The horse & donkey gave him pause, but they were very friendly and willing to sniff at him just as much as he wanted.

1:15 PM -- They have me trimming trees and pulling weeds.

2:45 PM -- One load of laundry done. I'm ready for a lie-down. Ruth is watching sports and conversing with Lisa.

3:30 PM -- I've been laying down and reading The Silmarillion. Lisa stuck her head in the room and asked if I felt like cooking; "not really," I said. Dammit, I'm on vacation and I've been very busy!

5:30 PM -- Lisa's been making some plans for visiting friends (and getting away from her mother). On Tuesday we'll be spending the night at Marina's house.

Spaghetti is ready and Lisa is taking a shower. Ruth has already been fussing over the cost of our doing a couple of loads of laundry, though I am only washing our clothes as a courtesy so she doesn't have to smell the stale tobacco on our otherwise clean clothes.

A quick aside: I am loving the keyboard on this here Toshiba L755. Full-size and easy for touch-typing; unlike any laptop I've used before.

8:30 PM -- I'm exhausted. Finished the dishes and I am ready to lie down with a book for a little while and fall asleep.
