"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." -- Benjamin Franklin, 1759
"A generation which ignores history has no past and no future." -- Robert Heinlein
The US is a bizarre country - seemingly wealthy, technologically advance, but very backward indeed when it comes to societal matters.
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand why in the US religion has to come into politics. In most other modern democracies overt religiosity would spell the end of any aspiring politician's career in politics. In the US, on the other hand, all politicians (of both major parties) have to profess religious beliefs of some kind. The nearest equivalent I can find elsewhere is with disfunctional societies like Iran or Afghnaistan under the Taliban.
On the economy, whatever the short-term fix to this political and economic disaster in the making (the surrealistic 'debt ceiling' issue), the US (like most other western deomocracies, not to mention Japan) has got to reduce the size of the State and cut back drastically on both its tax-raising and spending addictions if we want to ensure the long-term vialibity of our countries with a decent standard of living, whilst reducing the national deficit to more manageable proportions. The rest of the world, in Asia and parts of Latin America particularly, is moving ahead swiftly - in a few years time if the US and Europe (and Japan) continue as they are they will be economic backwaters with consequences for living standards that don't seem pleasant to me.
Interesting, all right. Not news though, to anyone who's paying attention.
