During my time on the street, I often found myself (willingly or otherwise) in various fundamentalist churches. Despite a daily dialog with the Power that I choose to call God, I was told on occasion that:
I "need to forge a relationship with Christ" lest I find myself "robbed, raped and murdered" (this statement came from a cult leader who wanted me to stay around, work for free and pay rent; I left, and none of those things happened);
"Liberals are stupid" (direct quote from a traveling evangelist); and, of course, from many fundy fools,
"The Second Law of Thermodynamics proves that evolution is impossible because it states that entropy must increase in a closed system."
News flash: the Earth is NOT a closed system.
- This planet is under constant bombardment by solar and extra-solar radiation, much of which is capable of producing genetic mutations.
- Literally tons of extra-terrestrial matter (space dust, meteorites) lands on our beloved planet every single day.
- The Earth emits radiation, magnetic fields, heat and radio waves into space with little constraint.
- The outer limit of our atmosphere is amorphous, porous and provides no serious barrier to external influences.
