There is a very good article on CNN.com about the myth of a "gay lifestyle" and how that term is brought up by people who dislike gays.
Back in the mid-1990's, I worked with an intelligent and generally likable fellow who said, "I don't have a problem with gays - I have some gay friends - it's just their whole lifestyle that bothers me."
My question to him was, "What exactly about their lifestyle bothers you? That they have jobs? Pay taxes? Go shopping? Own or rent their homes? Go on vacations? Eat and sleep? I have a LOT of gay friends and they live normal lives." He had no satisfactory answers, just a lot of "umms" and "uhhs".
Most of the gays and lesbians that I know (and I have had a lot of gay, lesbian and bisexual friends and acquaintances over the years) are in stable relationships. I know plenty of "straight" people who are quite promiscuous. Look at the divorce rates among "straight" couples. Observe the abundant infidelity among "straight" individuals who claim to be in stable relationships.
What consenting adults do with each other in their own bedrooms does not constitute a "lifestyle" unless that is the entirety of their activities.
