wtf?
It seems that a number of the people who attended rehab with me have already gone back out. A handful of them decided one night, after getting out of an A.A. meeting, to celebrate their sobriety by going to a bar for a beer.
They had all graduated the program and were living at halfway houses and knew better. A couple of them had at one time accumulated about twelve years of sobriety each but fell off the wagon some years past and were trying to get their lives back. As I said, they knew better.
Another guy started a relationship with a woman while at rehab. They were called on it by the clinical team; he ended up leaving early, she stayed an extra week. Recently he called her - drunk. I have been told that he is back in treatment.
Still another fellow showed up drunk to a meeting several weeks after graduating; I am pretty sure that wasn't the first time he had done so. About a week before I graduated I saw him at a meeting, eyes suspiciously red, but at least he didn't sound drunk that night.
Finally, there was a guy who only spent a few weeks in the program. He was kicked out because of his (admittedly serious) anger problems. Shortly thereafter, he got back together with an old girlfriend. One night he choked her to unconsciousness and is now facing a long term in prison.
The yearly reunion at rehab is coming up in two weeks. I can't wait to go; we'll see who has made it thus far and may learn more juicy details about who went out, who ended up in bed with each other, etc.
