Seven score and three years ago this evening, just after 10 P.M., President Abraham Lincoln was shot by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. He died at about 7:22 A.M. the next morning, the first United States president to be assassinated.
