she's gone

Mom was called home to be with the Lord at 7:20 am this morning, January 15 2007. I was on the night shift, keeping my eyes and ears open for any changes in her countenance or behaviour, and noticed that the rattling sound of her breathing was no longer noticable. I approached her and touched her shoulder; she glanced briefly at me then laid her head back down. I asked if she was still with us but received no response. Her flesh remained warm but I could detect neither breathing nor a heartbeat. I watched her for several minutes prior to rousing my father, saying that "I believe Mom is gone." He agreed and contacted the Hospice.

So far this morning, we have had a visits from a representative of the Hospice and also from my parents' pastor. We called both of them shortly after Mom passed, and we have also called several family members. I called my ex-wife and my boss, and both expressed sympathy and said that we are in their respective prayers.

Pastor Rene is here with us right now. I am getting ready to walk downtown to find a cheap pack of cigarettes. I'd like a few beers but that wouldn't sit well with Mom, Dad or any other family members. Most of them would prefer that I abstain from tobacco as well, but that is not going to happen today.

At least I took a shower and brushed my teeth. We will probably entertain a great deal of company today.

  3. Thanks Anna. An abridged version of the same poem was used at Grandma Hillman's funeral. It is a beautiful sentiment.
