New York State governor George Pataki (Pah-TAA-kee) is trying to prevent military base closings.

Most Americans don't realize that New York State is predominantly rural; agriculture aside (the largest portion of NY's economy, by the way), prisons and military bases provide a major source of jobs for the folks who live "in the sticks".
